In exciting public transport news, Aucklanders have made 100 million trips on public transport in the last 12 months and to celebrate (this is when it gets exciting), Auckland Transport has announced that the public will be able to travel for free on public transport for a day this June.

Buses, trains, and “most ferry services” will be free to everyone on Sunday, June 23.

On the day, passengers won’t need a paper ticket or AT Hop Card. You won’t even need to worry about going through station ticketing gates and tagging on buses. You just have to turn up.

This free promotion will be available from the first service of the day (4:40am) to last service of the day.

Also, this promotion is not available on the Skybus airport service and on certain ferry services including travelling to and from Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island. Visit the Auckland Transport website for a full list of services that are included in this promotion.

It is worth mentioning that reaching 100 million trips in one year is quite the accomplishment. This makes it the biggest year for public transport in the city since 1951 when trams were in their prime.
