In a great change for Auckland’s public transport, children up to the age of 16-years-old will be able to ride for free on buses, trains, and selected ferries on weekends and public holidays starting 7 September 2019.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said the free fares would encourage more people to use public transport and I agree. A free option is always worth considering.
There is a catch to availing the free child weekend fares because there is always a catch with something that is “free”. Each child needs to have a registered AT HOP card. In the grand scheme of things, I think this is a small price to pay if you are going to use the free fares often.
Buses on Waiheke Island are included in the free travel but the Waiheke ferries and SkyBus services are excluded.
