As someone who has not seen many ballets or has a big desire to do so, I am really interested in seeing French company Ballet Preljocaj’s retelling of the iconic fairytale Snow White. Let me share with you the reasons why.
This full-length ballet is not based on the classic Disney film but rather the original Brothers Grimm fairytale so I’m expecting this to be a dark adaptation and I am here for it. Give me dark; give me sinister. Basically, I’m hoping for lots of Black Swan vibes.
The wardrobe will also be a feast for the eyes as the costumes have been designed by legendary fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.
Like I said, I don’t know much about the world of ballet so I can’t give any opinion on the quality of the work Ballet Preljocaj produces but they have toured Snow White with sold-out seasons in Los Angeles, London, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. I see that as a vote of confidence.
Snow White will make its New Zealand premier as part of Auckland Arts Festival 2020 for five shows only starting on March 11, 2020 at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre in Aotea Centre.
Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
