The Imperial Russian Ballet Company is back in New Zealand with the three-hour ballet extravaganza A Festival of Russian Ballet.
Full disclosure: I’ve only seen one ballet show live and that was when I was a kid at school in the Philippines. It was for a school field trip and we saw The Nutcracker. While I can say I’ve seen The Nutcracker, I can’t really remember anything about the experience. I was too young; I don’t think I was able to appreciate the beauty and drama of it all.
For fellow ballet novices, this show sounds like a good one to attend given the diversity of the programme.
The performance is split in three acts. Act One is a condensed version of the classic ballet story Don Quixote. Act Two is the dark and dramatic Bolero – I read several reviews and a majority of people picked Bolero for their favourite moment. Act Three features a combination of different pieces including The Dying Swan, a dance from Swan Lake and the Can Can dance with a twist.
