There’s a new Auckland-wide winter festival starting next week and based on its packed line-up of more than 60 events, this new festival is on track to live up to the hype (I swear this festival keeps popping up in my social media feeds; there’s no escaping it.).

This new festival is called Elemental AKL. The name is inspired by the elements of air, fire, earth, and water so events are themed around celebrating Auckland’s energy and vibrancy through light, cuisine, culture, and entertainment.

Elemental AKL is on throughout July, which gives us 31 days of more than 60 free and ticketed events taking place in bars, eateries, theatres, and public spaces to name a few.

As I write this, I see that I’ve cited a couple of large numbers relating to the festival and I’m about to add another number to the mix. Part of the festivities is Elemental Feast, which involves more than 120 participating eateries around Auckland serving festival dishes inspired by the elements. Participating eateries in the city include Baduzzi, O’Connell St Bistro, Ostro, Pilkington’s, Culprit, Cassia, White and Wong’s, and HEAPS more.

Keep your eyes open for light shows and installations illuminating Auckland’s parks, waterfronts, and city streets. The Vector Lights on Auckland Harbour Bridge is one of the light shows you can look forward to seeing.

There are lots of other events taking place in the city as part of Elemental AKL. You can choose from the Aotea Square Ice Rink, the first ever arrival of the Auckland Night Markets in Aotea Square, the Tūrama Festival in Albert Park featuring interactive installations and artworks, the Matariki on the Waterfront event at Silo Park celebrating Māori culture, and the Craft’d Wine + Spirits Festival at Wynyard Quarter all about craft beer and boutique wine.

Elemental AKL is going to be a big draw for locals and visitors because the line-up doesn’t just stop at the events I mentioned. Visit the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) website for the full festival programme.
