Here are my picks of what is worth watching on the big screen in March:
Captain Marvel (March 6)
I am so excited for this movie! Why? Because after at least a decade, Marvel Studios is finally releasing a standalone film led by a female superhero. About damn time! And if you saw the post-credits scene at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, then one can assume that she will play a key role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.
Captain Marvel follows the story of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.
Destroyer (March 14)
The great Nicole Kidman stars in this grim crime thriller about a burnt out, alcoholic LAPD detective who reconnects with people from an undercover assignment many years ago in order to make peace with the demons that destroyed her past. It’s not exactly a chirpy movie to watch but it is an opportunity to see another engrossing performance by one of the best actors there is.
Daffodils (March 21)
A New Zealand movie musical is coming out this month! Based on the critically acclaimed stage play of the same name, Daffodils is a bittersweet love story told with beautiful re-imaginings of iconic New Zealand songs.
Dumbo (March 28)
This movie is going to make me cry. I just know it. I couldn’t even keep it together while watching the trailer. The new film is a grand live action remake directed by Tim Burton, which makes me think that this is going to be a unique film because Tim Burton does unique really well. The remake expands the story of the original Disney classic so it appears we may be getting a new story. From what I’ve read, in the new film, Dumbo’s first flight will be shown towards the beginning of the story (unlike in the original film when it was shown at the end) and then follows what happens to him after he takes flight.
Us (March 28)
Following the breakout success of Get Out, writer-director Jordan Peele has gifted us with another horror film to freak out over. While details of the plot remain under wraps, the basic premise revolves around a home invasion at a family’s beach house. If you are one of those who think that Get Out is more of a thriller than a horror movie, Peele has said that US is going to be different to Get Out. Brace yourself as it sounds like Us is going to fully embrace the horror.
