How To Celebrate St Patrick’s Day In The City

If you needed a reminder that we’re days away from the middle of March (Time is indeed flying by!), we’re just days away from St Patrick’s Day 2020.

As always, St Patrick’s Day is on March 17 and this year, the day falls on a Tuesday.

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, the Hugh Green Group St Patrick’s Day Parade is returning to Queen Street on Saturday, March 14. The parade starts midday and features Irish inspired floats, traditional music and dancing, marching bands, leprechauns, and St Patrick himself.

Or should I say herself?

This year’s main star is going to look different from previous years (26 years to be exact) as the role for the patron saint became available. A search was conducted (there was a job ad on Trade Me and everything) and the role was open to all genders and backgrounds. So there’s a chance that we could see a St Patricia come parade day. #2020.

The celebrations continue after the parade with the Hugh Green Group Irish Music and Dance Festival outside the Auckland Town Hall from 12:30pm-3:30pm.

On St Patrick’s Day itself, the Sky Tower, Viaduct Harbour lights, and Queen Street lights will be lit up green because the more green the better.

Also on the actual day itself, don’t miss the opportunity to visit one of the many Irish bars we have in town like O’Hagans, The Fiddler, Father Ted’s, and Danny Doolans. You’ll surely have a good time.
