As the title says, here are my picks of what is worth watching on the big screen in August:

The Wife (August 2)
It is a sin that Glenn Close has not won an Oscar yet but that may soon change with her performance in The Wife. Based on the novel of the same name by Meg Wolitzer, Close portrays a devoted wife who questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm with her husband, where he is slated to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Said to be Oscar-worthy and arguably her best performance, seeing Close act the hell out of this role should be worth the price of admission.

The Spy Who Dumped Me (August 9)
If the movie lives up to the trailer, then we’re in for a fun and hilarious time. As incredibly silly as it was, the trailer made me laugh and that’s really all I’m wanting from a movie like this. I want to laugh! Sure, the premise of discovering an ex is a spy isn’t original at all but I’m keen to see what Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon bring to this action comedy.

Book Club (August 16)
I’m a sucker for heart-warming stories and this movie looks wholeheartedly delightful. But also, let’s not forget that the movie is mega star-studded as well. You’ve got Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen all in one movie – this is really the selling point for me. I don’t even care what the movie is about; I just want to see these four women act and work together. But in case you do care what the movie is about, I still have you covered. The Book Club follows the lives of four lifelong friends after they read 50 Shades of Grey in their monthly book club.

Crazy Rich Asians (August 30)
I really, really hope this movie is good because I want it to do well – meaning I hope this movie makes a lot of money for producers. There is still not enough Asian representation in Hollywood and if this movie is a success, I am hopeful that it encourages the folks in Hollywood to create opportunities for more diversity for future projects. Plus, it’s a contemporary romantic comedy featuring crazy and rich Asians so it will likely be incredibly entertaining seeing all the opulence and craziness that comes with the story.
