Matilda was one of my absolute favourite films growing up – ask my parents if you don’t believe me. We had it on VHS so I was easily able to watch the film numerous times when I was a kid. Yes, the nostalgia is real for me for this one. So when I heard a production of Matilda The Musical is finally coming to Auckland in August, I was so excited I could eat an entire chocolate cake.
Cue: BRUCE. BRUCE. BRUCE. BRUCE.
Sadly, I have not read Roald Dahl’s novel so I only have the film to go by but I hope the musical captures the essence of the story I grew up loving. I also cannot wait to see familiar characters come to life on stage such as her dodgy car salesman dad, her superficial mum, her lovely teacher, Miss Honey and the nasty headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. Truth be told, Miss Trunchbull is the character I’m most looking forward to seeing. I wonder if she is going to be just as entertainingly horrid on stage as she is in the film.
Matilda The Musical is the story of an extraordinary young girl with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind who, belittled by her parents and school headmistress, forms a close bond with her kind-hearted teacher. Upon discovering she has an unusual gift, she takes matters into her own hands and uses it to teach cruel adults a lesson.
