When I told my brother that The Civic is turning 90 this month, his response was “That’s old.” It’s not the most poetic description but it’s very accurate. To celebrate the milestone birthday, people will get the chance to go on special commemorative tours of the iconic Auckland landmark.
There will be three guided tours on December 20, the day The Civic opened for the first time back in 1929. Today, The Civic is the top venue for musical theatre shows. I’m going to be there on Friday to see Dita Von Teese’s burlesque show and it’s the perfect venue for it.
There were 90 spots available for the tours and I said “were” because unfortunately all the December tours are sold out. All is not lost, you can sign up to a waitlist on the Auckland Live website to be notified on when the next tours go on sale.
Tour attendees will learn the building’s history and design, plus get exclusive access to areas that are usually reserved for the performers and stagehands.
