Admire The Very Best In Photojournalism At The World Press Photo Exhibition 2017

In the age of 24-hour news channels and social media, I don’t blame someone for feeling the world is in a regular state of impending doom. A lot is happening. Yes, there are many lows but there is a good share of highs as well. Every year, the World Press Photo exhibition brings together the very best images published by press photographers capturing essential moments of the world we live in.

The exhibition celebrates the most powerful, moving and visually stuning images from the past year – selected from 80,408 images submitted by 5,034 photographers from 126 countries.

You can spend at least an hour at the exhibition taking in the photos on display and reading about the story of each image.

Personally, what really stands out to me is Jonathan Bachman’s iconic photo of a woman calmly standing her ground in front of armoured police officers at a rally in Louisiana, U.S. protesting police violence against black men. I remember seeing this image for the first time on Twitter and thinking it perfectly tells the entire story about a significant moment in America in just one photograph. It’s an image that is truly hard to forget.

The World Press Photo exhibition runs until July 30 on Level 6 of Smith and Caughey’s, Queen Street.
