It’s about time the Auckland Harbour Bridge has its own light show! For the longest time, I have thought the Harbour Bridge should have its own fabulous lighting display – emphasis on the word fabulous. The Sky Tower looks beautiful lit up at night and a technicolour Harbour Bridge is just certain to elevate the Auckland city skyline during the evenings. I predict I am going to be seeing a lot more pictures of the Harbour Bridge across social media and I mean that as a good thing.
The lights are set to launch this coming Auckland Anniversary Weekend on Saturday, January 27. The show starts at 9:10pm and runs for six minutes. The next show starts at 9:30pm and then it will repeat every half hour until midnight.
And because I am a very thoughtful person and I just want you to have the best view of the bridge for this spectacular light show, I went on a purposeful walk around town to find out where is the best spot to watch the show.
I walked along Princes Wharf first and while yes, you can see the Harbour Bridge from the far end of the wharf, the bridge is a bit far away. I feel like you have to squint your eyes to see it clearly. This spot is a no for me; you can definitely do better and get a closer view.
My next stop was Silo Park in Wynyard Quarter. Okay, now this is the place to be! You will get a nice view of the bridge over here.
Keep walking towards Silo Marina and the views are even better. And if you wanted to make an evening out of it and have dinner and drinks beforehand, there are plenty of restaurants around the area to keep you entertained pre-show.
So for me, Silo Park is the best spot in town to watch the show. However if you want to step it up even more, you can set sail and go on a boat, yacht, or cruise and watch the light show on the water and get as close as possible to all the action. Now, that is what you call extra and I am all for it!
And props to Vector for using 90,000 solar powered LEDs. So not only will the lights be pretty to look at, they will also be energy-efficient as well. Win-win!
