The Auckland Diwali Festival has a long 18-year history so announcements about when the festival comes back every year are nothing new. This year’s festival, however, will offer something different. For the first time, some of Auckland’s most famous landmarks will be lit up as part of the Diwali celebrations.
The Sky Tower, Auckland Museum, Auckland Harbour Bridge, and Viaduct Harbour will be lit up in Diwali-themed colours of fuchsia, yellow, and orange.
While the lights will be a cool, new attraction, what you can count on remaining the same will be the wide range of Indian dishes on offer.
Described as New Zealand’s largest vegetarian festival, there will be more than 40 food stalls along Queen Street opposite the Auckland Town Hall.
Along with the bright lights and good food, there will be more than 50 hours of live entertainment, with more than 200 performances throughout the two-day festival.
This year’s Auckland Diwali Festival will take place on October 12 and 13 at Aotea Square and Queen Street from midday until 9pm each day.
The festival will end with a fireworks display on Sunday just before 9pm from the Q Theatre rooftop.
