Here’s Where You Can Taste And Learn About Local Craft Beer This Spring

Between beer and wine, I am definitely a wine woman; this past weekend’s bottomless lunch can confirm this. So it’s safe to say that I don’t know much about beer, let alone craft beer. But this spring, the Cornerbar is hosting an event celebrating craft beer with some of the best local craft brewers and this may be a good opportunity to learn more about local beer.

From October 27 to December 8, local craft brewers will take over the taps at Cornerbar in Hotel DeBrett for what is being called the “Tap Takeover Series” event.

McLeod Brewery will be starting things off on October 27 from 3pm. Founder Geoff Gwynne will be treating guests to exclusive tastes of ‘Spring Sun’ Belgian Wit 5% (the first time this beer will be tasted publicly in Auckland), Paradise Pale Ale 5.5% (the brewery’s flagship beer), and also Fresh, unfiltered IPA.

Independent brewery Sawmill will be taking over the taps on November 10. Logan Richmond from Sawmill will bring with him XPA (halfway between an IPA and a Pilsner), East Coast India Pale Ale (a pale ale with intense aromas of orange and tropical fruit), and a Raspberry Sour (a tart wheat beer brewed with hibiscus flowers and raspberries).

Sten will be your hosts on November 24 to showcase some new beers from Epic along with some multi-award winning favourites. Expect big flavours from Epic as owner and brewer Luke Nicholas love dramatic hops and big punchy flavours.

And to cap off the series, Guy, from Auckland brewery Urbanaut, will be manning the taps on December 8. Urbanaut, a made-up name meaning urban explorer, is an homage to the owner’s worldly adventures so guests will be tasting a range of beers where each beer expresses the flavour of a different city from around the world.

So if you’re like me and you are a beer know-nothing, this series will give guests more information about local craft beer (through expert knowledge and tastings) so we can get a better understanding of them. If you’re a beer fan to begin with, then this event is just a good one to go to anyway.

Tickets are available at the event and it is $15 per tasting rack.
