While it feels like we just celebrated the start of another new year, we have now reached the halfway mark of January and that means the first long weekend of 2019 is upon us. For those of you who have yet to make any plans (myself included), here are things to do in the city during Auckland Anniversary Weekend:
Auckland International Buskers Festival 2019
January 25-28
Where: Auckland Waterfront
Bring some cash with you because mega-talented international and local performers are hitting the streets over Anniversary Weekend for the Auckland International Buskers Festival. In its 19th year, performers are set to delight crowds with dancing, singing, hula hoops, fire stunts, acrobatics, magic, and more.
Ice Cream Sundae
January 27
Where: Silo Park
What’s a long weekend during summer without an event all about ice cream? The second annual Ice Cream Sundae market is back in Silo Park where Auckland’s most loved ice cream aficionados come with an abundance of sweet treats, alongside Auckland’s top food trucks, DJs, and some modern twists on ice cream-inspired drinks from the pop-up Silo Bar.
Laneway Festival 2019
January 28
Where: Albert Park
At this point, an Auckland summer is not complete without the annual Laneway Festival and this year is even more special given that the festival is celebrating its 10th birthday this go-around. To make its 10th anniversary more memorable, the fabulous Florence + the Machine returns to Laneway after performing on the first Auckland Laneway in 2010. Talk about coming full circle! The festival’s full line-up is your usual mix of exciting international and local artists featuring A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Denzel Curry, Jorja Smith, and Jon Hopkins to name a few.
Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta 2019
January 28
Where: Viaduct Harbour
The annual Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta is held to celebrate the founding of the City of Sails. The regatta attracts a huge fleet of vessels of all shapes and sizes putting to the water across the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf under paddle, sail, and steam power. It’s a great day for spectators to see the maritime history of our city.
