After attracting more than 63,000 visitors last year, the return of the Bright Nights festival should come as no surprise. Bright Nights is a full-scale lighting experience along Auckland’s iconic waterfront.
This year’s Bright Nights takes place from May 8 until May 12. For five nights, you can see the Viaduct Harbour come alive from 6pm each night with more than a dozen installations from local and international artists. Installations include UV Spaghetti from Angus Muir, a luminous jungle comprising of glow-in-the-dark ropes, and Crank Zappa from Amigo & Amigo, an interactive jellyfish sculpture created from plastic waste.
Other installations include Trilogy from Simon Holden, a towering beacon that uses infrared touch technology that allows people to draw near, touch, and play like a string instrument, and Vector Lights are set to host a sustainable light show on the Auckland Harbour Bridge during each evening of the festival.
Bright Nights weaves through the Viaduct Harbour hospitality precinct, from the New Zealand Maritime Museum to Waitematā Plaza. This year’s trail has almost doubled in length.
Bright Nights is a free event for all ages and 100,000 visitors are expected to show up for its second showcase.
To mark the end of the festival, a fireworks display is scheduled for May 12.
