This Halloween post is inspired by my brother who is in his second year of university and is currently knee-deep in assignments. While I’m very proud that he is focused on doing these assignments and he has his priorities straight, I keep telling him that Halloween is conveniently on a Saturday this year and that he should take a short break and celebrate the occasion with his friends. The main reason why I insist on this is because this year has been particularly rough (for obvious reasons) and we should really be celebrating these occasions when we can. I’m saying this to both my brother and to you. We’re in Level 1 after all!
We’re a few days away from the 31st of October and he is still ambivalent about doing something for Halloween (I’m going to a friend’s Halloween party dressed in a bunny costume I bought last weekend at the Look Sharp store in town). If you’re like my brother and you’re still not sure of what to do this weekend, here are things to do if you do decide to celebrate Halloween at the very last minute:
Halloween Parties
Surprise, surprise… you’ve got an abundance of Halloween themed parties in town to choose from. The requirements are pretty simple, really. Dress up and have a good time. Venues that have advertised events include Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen and Cassette Nine on Friday night and Wynyard Pavilion, The Roxy and Face Club on Saturday night.
Monster Factory at the Sky Tower
This Halloween experience is a family-friendly affair located on Level 60 of the iconic Sky Tower. Recommended for kids aged between 5-14 years old, the Monster Factory is open this weekend (31 October – 1 November) from 10am-7pm. Kids are asked to come ready to trick or treat in their costume and complete obstacles and challenges. To enter the Monster Factory, Sky Tower entry tickets apply.
Halloween Screenings
Watch either classic or new release horror flicks on the big screen this Halloween at Event Cinemas Queen Street. You’re even encouraged to wear your spooky costume while you watch! New releases include The Empty Man and The Craft: Legacy and classics include The Evil Dead, Edward Scissorhands and an Alien double feature.
Halloween Treats
This is my personal favourite on the list because it involves eating. One can simply commemorate Halloween by indulging in delicious, sweet treats. Krispy Kreme in Chancery Square has brought back their Halloween-inspired doughnuts of a skull, a mummy, and a spider web called Krispy Skremes. The Honest Chocolat store in Commercial Bay also has Halloween treats on offer like chocolate eyeballs and skulls.
