Here are my picks of what is worth watching on the big screen in September:
The Nun (September 6)
Full disclosure, I was not interested in seeing this film at the cinemas at all. I first thought that it was not worth the price of a ticket; I was just going to wait until I could watch it at home. But this film is making a lot of buck in the American box office since its release so that to me is a good gauge that the film is, at the very least, a crowd pleaser. And I enjoy watching scary movies anyways so I changed my mind and added the film on this must-see list. The film is about a young nun who takes her own life at a cloistered abbey in Romania and the Vatican sends a priest and a novitiate to investigate. While they are there, they are confronted by a demonic nun and a lot shit goes down.
Christopher Robin (September 20)
My childhood! I feel like when I watch this film, I’m going to be exactly like Christopher Robin and be transported back to my childhood. In the film, Christopher Robin is an overworked family man and his old pal Winnie-the-Pooh pays him a visit to help him rediscover the joys in life. This film is going to be nostalgia overload and this is what is drawing me to the film. The main thing I’m most excited about is being reunited with my old friends Pooh and the rest of the gang including Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger.
Johnny English Strikes Again (September 20)
Props to the marketing team of this film because I feel like I’ve seen the trailer for this every time before I watch something in the cinema. And the trailer is hilarious! Well the marketing was well spent because now I do want to see this film. Called out of retirement, Johnny English returns to save the world after a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain. Sure, this film is no doubt going to be stupid funny but you know what you’re getting with a film like this. Take it for what it is and just have a good time. And the film also stars Emma Thompson and she is a treasure.
Night School (September 27)
I am going to be laughing my ass off while watching this. I just know it. Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in one film is a recipe for comedic gold. Separately, they already make me laugh out loud so the combo of the two of them is a true gift for all of us who just want to LAUGH. The film is about a group of troublemakers who are forced to attend night school in the hope that they’ll pass the GED exam to finish high school. Hart co-wrote and Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee directed the film so yes, this film will be very funny.
